Doctors Needed
www.actsclinic.com
Swaziland or South Africa
Career doctor who would be willing to commit to Swaziland for many years, two years being the minimum. Hoping to find somebody to take on the Acts II project, but they would need support.
A two-week orientation at Acts 1 would be helpful followed by a period of time in Swaziland. The clinic is in its early days there, but once it is running it would be good for a steady stream of support to help out.

Registration in SA is complicated but not impossible. A volunteer's visa for a short-term is possible. We have had great success with doctors coming for two months. It takes up to two weeks to orientate to our rural low-tech diagnosis and management, but after that volunteer doctors can be very useful. We would love to have doctors and nurses come regularly. Our success at the moment, in running an HIV clinic at a primary health care level is a measure of the enormity of the pandemic. Contact: actsclinic@telkomsa.net

Medical Doctor
www.lifelinemalawi.com
Location: Lilongwe, Malawi, Africa

Lifeline Malawi is a well established Charitable organization based in Calgary Alberta, and they are a registered NGO in Malawi. We have had a mission on the ground in Africa for eight years and have grown from humble beginnings to a vibrant and growing Medical Mission. We have 33 staff presently, and with our new clinic coming on-line, we will be approaching 55 staff by Christmas 2006.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries on earth. They are making progress but the country is visited by drought and famine on a regular basis and the per capita income is very low. HIV/AIDS is decimating the population. However, it has been described as the "Warm Heart of Africa" The people are delightful and grateful for our assistance. You can actually see the results and the effects of not only improving health, but in many cases, saving lives.

The medical care is centered in a clinic setting (no overnight patients), including HIV/AIDS testing, counselling and treatment. We provide free medical attention and drug supplies to those who come to the clinic for treatment. We also have outreach clinics to the villages.

You would be active in the medical work, dealing directly with patients, as well as being a key contributor to the staff development and interaction with government agencies and other NGO partners. It is a well-balanced portfolio that combines practical hands-on work with leadership and management components.

We should mention that there is little if any financial compensation. We assist in providing housing and transportation, but we are not yet funded to the place where we can pay competitive salaries. This would be suitable for an individual who is self-sufficient financially or who can obtain funding and support through personal contacts.

So, why would you even think of coming? This position represents a great opportunity to practice basic medicine that will be enormously appreciated in a country that has such great need. You will live in a safe, western style house and travel to one of our two clinics outside of the metropolitan area. There is an active expatriate community, decent schooling if you have young children and a rapidly growing list of available items and services. Mostly, it would be for the opportunity to be of service, and to answer a "call" that you may hear in your heart. Contracts can vary from six months to two or more years.

More important than technical or specialist expertise is the need for a physician with a humanitarian heart. The hours can be long and hard, but the work is immensely rewarding. There is ample opportunity to balance work and relaxation.

Qualifications: Must be a registered physician. Experience in tropical medicine would be an asset, but is not mandatory. Contact chrisbrooks@lifelinemalawi.com
