Medical Project Partnership
info@emascanada.ca
Lubango
Thinking about coming to Angola for 3 to 6 weeks or more! We have had a partnership in a medical project in the southeast region of the country that serves a small church hospital/clinic 38 km south of the city. The work involves basic primary care (Dr. Karen Henriksen), some general surgery (Dr. Steve Foster), with a growing extension service in several other towns and/or missions. The work depends immensely on nurses to carry out the vast majority of clinical care. Since the nurses training is very basic, constant teaching is required. A large public health programme is another important part of the work. Accommodations, meals and travel within the country will be provided. We suggest that a minimum time should be 3-4 weeks, though more would be better! Experience or an interest in third world medical care with all its limitations and challenges is preferred. A knowledge of Portuguese would greatly enhance both the contribution and the personal benefit. The conditions are not ideal. Equipment, laboratory facilities, medicines are minimal. Space is terribly limited. There is electricity only when there is surgery going on. There is no running water most of the time. The patients are mostly very poor, and there are always too many. One has to be able to cope with all kinds of medical problems, but the most common are infectious diseases (including AIDS) intestinal and respiratory diseases, hypertension and rheumatic heart disease, parasitic infections, trauma, and nutritional deficiencies disease. With almost no diagnostic aids, clinical skill is rapidly developed. For more information, contact: info@emascanada.ca
