Philippines

Picture

The Philippines is a country of 80 million people spread over an archipelago of 7000 islands, a very beautiful country whose people often live in areas inaccessible to health care. It is in these areas that we concentrate our efforts always with the advice and assistance of the local population.

November 2007

By providing training to colleagues in sub-specialties of ENT and ophthalmology, the team leaves behind a lasting legacy of increased care to the people of the region. Further, we have the ability to work closely with colleagues allowing our witness to be seen. Thanks to the generosity of donors, we have also been able to leave the necessary equipment behind.

Project Mabuhay 2005

February 2005--fifth mission to the Philippines, providing eye and ENT care.

We now have two portable operating room microscopes and surgical supplies and instruments. We had the support of eye and ENT pharmaceutical and equipment supply companies, which made it possible to restore the sight and hearing of many.

In Baguio, we performed lectures, presentation rounds and teaching surgeries at Benguet Hospital. We look forward to an on-going relationship with the eye program in Baguio.

In Batangas, we treated patients with hearing loss and complex ear cases. Relationships were established with the local regional authorities.

On the island of Semirara, we treated hundreds of eye and ENT patients and operated on cataract and pterygium patients.

Summary

The Philippines is a wonderful place to work and the people are always appreciative and receptive of our work. We are so grateful for an excellent team spirit and for the generosity of Philippine friends who contribute so much to our in-country costs. We hope to be able to continue serving the indigent population of the various islands of the Philippines and look forward to exchanging knowledge and experience with the local medical community.
