Vietnam
There are many poor rural communities in Vietnam. Many people cannot afford medical care and many children are at-risk. The existing healthcare services are in much need of improvement.
Our annual medical mission to Vietnam began in 1995, as a project under EMAS Evangelical Medical Aid Society. Every year, a group of doctors, dentists, nurses, and volunteers goes on a two-week trip to Vietnam, treating poor patients in remote areas, working with local doctors, and helping hospitals with equipment.
Spring 2007
“Outreach and Training”
The team sets up outreach camps, at medical clinics or at local churches. They examine the patients, give out medications, extract teeth, hand out eyeglasses, perform cataract surgeries, and also give out gifts of food and basic necessities. The team also provides care for orphanages, and does advanced training of Vietnamese healthcare professionals at the major medical centres.
The team is usually 15–20 people. If we have more than 30 people, we divide into two teams and head out to different locations. Each team normally treats around 4,000 patients during the two-week mission trip.
“Heart to Live and to Love”
A Project Assisting Children with Heart Surgery
As we travelled around the country we came across many children with congenital heart problems who needed surgery. As the team could not perform the surgeries, we decided to do some fund-raising to cover the cost of these operations. The religious sisters of the Visitation are kind enough to help the children and their families coming from different locations, waiting to be admitted to the hospital. We have sponsored more than 80 children undergoing heart surgery at Hue Central Hospital! Each surgery would have cost approximately $2,000–$2,500 US; so all in all, we have funded close to $200,000 US, thanks to all the generous benefactors, donors, and friends of Medical Aid for Vietnam!
The need for additional funds for these desperately sick children is immense. We would like to thank everyone who has so generously supported this project and have made it possible for more than 80 children to have this surgery. Please continue to support us in order that more of these children will have a chance at a normal life.

July 2006
This year, I was part of a group of 47 people, who went on a medical mission trip. This was the largest team we have had since we started in 1995. We divided the team into three groups and covered three regions of Vietnam.

With the help of some local doctors, we treated 12,500 patients, mostly through outreach camps in remote areas—examining patients, giving out free medication, food, eye glasses, extracting teeth, etc. We also did some cataract surgeries at a local hospital and funded 15 heart surgeries for children. We brought a portable phaco machine for cataract surgery and donated it to the Nha Trang hospital. We also donated implants and other supplies to enable the local doctors to do free cataract surgeries for the poor.
The Vietnam team is growing larger every year, so for 2007, we are planning two trips to Vietnam. We welcome and invite all to join us, for the experience of a lifetime.
We ask for your prayers, your support and ask you to let others know about the Vietnam medical mission.
Thank you and God bless,
Fr. Tien Tran
November, 2005 Trip
We had a team of 26 on this trip, including several Vietnamese nationals who worked with us for the entire trip.
We had our first optometrist this year;
We gave away over 3,000 pairs of eyeglasses;
We held 12 clinics in different locations, seeing 9,000 patients;
Our dental team performed countless surgeries;
The dental assistants did hygiene training as well as surgical assistance;
We donated three microscopes;
We saw the statue of the Virgin Mary which had begun to shed tears.
We thank God for blessing us with a wonderful expedition.
Yours in Him,
Dr. David Neima
