Following three decades of war, extreme poverty is widespread in Angola. The healthcare system and the educational system have been greatly affected. There is now a shortage of healthcare workers amidst rampant epidemics and diseases. The life expectancy and child mortality rates are among the worst in the world.

EMAS CANADA has seen the needs of the Angolan people and have stepped in to assist wherever they can as funding permits. They support local doctors, ophthalmology outreaches and medical initiatives.

Saurimo Trip

I have recently returned from Saurimo in the northeast of the country, where I did another surgical trip. It is so far to travel by road-more or less a five-day trip. Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) makes it possible for us to reach blind people who would otherwise have no hope of regaining their sight. In the ten working days that I was there, I was able to see almost 600 patients in consultation, and I performed 84 operations with happy results. If it had not been the rainy season, many more would have been able to get into the city. We hope to go back in September or October, and if possible, go on to the city of Dundo in the province north of Saurimo, if funding permits, where there has never been any eye work done.

It is very satisfying to see people who sometimes were many years blind and are suddenly able to see, and able to recognize their relatives and their children. They can walk about normally afterwards, and thus relieve their families and friends of the tremendous time-consuming responsibility of leading them around. And if a blind person falls and breaks something, you can imagine how much more that patient drains the resources of family and community. The CBM eye hospital is built to accommodate four ophthalmologists and has excellent facilities; but unfortunately we have not been able to attract any other ophthalmologists willing to take on a two-five year term, learn Portuguese, etc. Please contact us if interested.

Thank you for your continued interest and support.
