In southern China, many migrant workers struggle to support their families on an annual income of less than $100 US. Consequently, they rarely seek medical care when ill. Their health also has implications for the population at large.

In the Pearl River Delta region of Guangdong, there are more than 10,000 factories with about 30 million workers; more than 60 percent of them are women, ages 18-25, living in very cramped factory residences where up to 12 share a room. They typically work 11-12 hour days, under difficult conditions. Most have only a junior middle school education. Being migrant workers, they have no healthcare coverage and lack awareness of HIV/AIDS, reproduction and overall healthcare.

November 2008

'Factory Free Walk' is an EMAS project organized by EMAS Hong Kong, using a 'holistic approach' to serving the needs of the factory workers in the Pearl River Delta region of Guangdong. Medical and dental teams host health clinics for the workers and they understand that it's "the love of Christ that compels us."

October 2007

The Factory Free Walk opportunities for medical personnel include basic health teaching and first aid. There are some opportunities for clinical practice, especially for dental members.
