Message from...
the EMAS Chair

The last few months have brought severe hardships to many countries all over the world. It is hard to read the news and see the pictures of the earthquakes in Haiti, Chile and Western China, and the fatal mudslides in Western and Eastern Uganda. But I have also been deeply moved by the response from our many donors and teams. The generous donations we have received from individuals and other organizations have enabled us to respond quickly to the situation in Haiti. We were able to send funds, initially for essential supplies, and then for reconstruction, using local people for the work so as to provide jobs. The community which we are supporting in Bon Repos, a suburb of Port-au-Prince, is also using their own resources, to put their lives back together, and is very grateful for what we have been able to provide. Several Canadian doctors have volunteered to join teams, organized by Medical Teams International, and two are currently in Haiti. Our regular team will also be going in May.
It is easy to get discouraged when we receive so many inquiries from overseas, for assistance from EMAS Teams, only to find that we cannot mobilize the number of doctors and nurses needed. Just take a look at our “Recruitment Corner” in this issue to see the needs that are unmet; but then I am reminded of our generous donors and passionate team members and the exhortation in Thessalonians 5:13 to “Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work,” and I give thanks for you all and for the God-given opportunity we have to be of service. Hendrik Visser, M.D.

Disaster
Relief
Haiti
Earthquake |
|
EMAS CANADA is responding to assist
the victims of the deadly 7.0 earthquake that
hit 10 miles from
Port-au-Prince,
Haiti,
on January 12. |
| |
|
| |
In the Bon Repos community, just outside of Port-au-Prince, where EMAS CANADA has been sending missions teams for over 10 years, many are injured, homeless or without food and water, trying to survive. International aid has been very slow to reach this region.
EMAS CANADA has been stepping in to fill the gap. Our Haitian partners have been purchasing supplies locally and distributing food, water or vouchers to approximately 600 people. A humanitarian/medical EMAS Team will travel this month led by Dr. Plourde.
The El-Shaddai Property
The El-Shaddai Church, which was housing the elementary school children and the nutrition centre, has been damaged beyond repair by the earthquake. There is an urgency to move forward with the new building project. The construction of a single-story building, with a security fence, is quickly underway. Community members are assisting with construction under a work-for-food arrangement. At first, it will be used as a school/nutrition centre, church and medical clinic.
Eventually, a more elaborate long-term facility will be built, in conjunction with Engineering Ministries International (eMi), to house the El-Shaddai church, school, parish medical facility and perhaps accommodations for short-term missions teams.
Please help the people of Haiti by donating to
the “Haiti Disaster Relief” fund.
Our ability to help depends on YOU. |

EMAS CANADA/
MTI TEAM for Haiti
In another area of Port-au-Prince affected by the earthquake, EMAS CANADA medical volunteers will be joining an MTI Team (Medical Teams International), to bring humanitarian medical aid to the suffering people of Haiti. They need your support to cover travel costs and other travel-related expenses. Please donate to the “Disaster Relief-EMAS/MTI Medical Team Support” fund.

Step by Step...
a Projects' Journey
Continuing our
Ugandan journey....
In our last two issues, I have written about a new project in Fort Portal, Uganda where EMAS is partnered with RAMBIA, a local NGO which operates a small health centre. See www.emascanada.org/ugandareport.htm I promised to keep you up-to-date, regardless of whether the news was good or bad.
Last year, an EMAS Team worked at the Health Centre that was only partially built and we were able to see what was still needed for this community to get proper healthcare—a small maternity ward and out-patient department with related equipment, staff housing, proper latrines, medical records, an adequate pharmacy, clean water, electricity, and sufficient supplies of medications to serve patients and community health workers. |
|
We hoped to raise funds to help with these needs; and although we did receive donations of several thousand dollars, which have been used to complete the building exterior, we have not received the funds needed to tackle the other issues. RAMBIA's enterprising volunteer Executive Director managed to find a UK charity which supplies used hospital equipment and was ready to ship hospital beds, a suction machine for the maternity ward and other supplies, but they needed $6,000 to pay the shipping, which we couldn't provide. So the offer of equipment has had to lapse.
In March, the community around the Health Centre suffered from heavy rains and mudslides. It is a very hilly region and increased cultivation of the hills has made the area vulnerable to erosion. |
|
|
Homes were destroyed, and people took shelter in churches. Recently planted seeds were washed away, raising fears that there will not be sufficient food come harvest time.
We are planning another visit in September and are hoping for additional team members this year, particularly a pharmacist and a dentist. We are also seeking donors and prayer support for this community which is working hard to improve the quality of their lives amidst great hardship.
I`ll keep you posted....
Michael J. Wills
Executive Director
