More than 32 million Indonesians currently live below the poverty line. Public services are inadequate and half the population lacks health insurance coverage. The infant mortality rate is 36.8% and maternal mortality is high.

Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes. Malaria is rampant in rural areas. Chronic conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders and tobacco dependency cause much suffering and often death. Mental health has long been neglected. This situation was further aggravated by the tsunami of December 2004 which had a significant impact on the mental state of those affected.

Summary - December 2011

Many people live in dire poverty in Indonesia. The arduous terrain and the absence of roads, in some areas, prevent people from having access to even the most basic services such as healthcare and education beyond elementary school. Access to safe drinking water is limited, resulting in frequent cases of diarrhoea and often death. Malaria is rampant in rural areas.

EMAS teams are working with the medical and dental faculties at the University of Jakarta to bring assistance and exploring another mission facility.

Please pray, as mission work is difficult in this country.

November, 2010

The lack of proper roads in certain areas makes it impossible for many people to obtain even basic services such as healthcare and education beyond elementary school. EMAS teams are building relationships with the medical and dental faculties at the University of Jakarta to bring assistance.

December, 2008

EMAS teams are expected to be working with the medical and dental faculties at the University of Jakarta. Opportunities are opening for outreach in under-serviced areas.
