The people of Malawi are suffering from diseases such as AIDS, malaria and TB. Nearly one-third of the young adult population of Malawi is infected with the HIV virus which has already claimed the lives of a whole generation of parents. Elderly grandparents are left to look after their orphaned grandchildren, most of which are severely anemic from chronic malaria, malnutrition and intestinal parasites.

Summary - November 2010

In collaboration with Lifeline Malawi, the EMAS team makes a contribution in a number of areas—providing hands-on medical care in village clinics, assisting with training of local medical personnel, equipping local pastors/leaders in preventative teaching and providing spiritual support. The team also aims to improve the local healthcare delivery infrastructure including upgrading a clinic.

Our partner is Lifeline Malawi Association (LM), an NGO dedicated to providing medical aid to the people of developing countries. Lifeline Malawi provides medical, emotional and spiritual care for people within the Malawian communities it serves. They administer primary healthcare through out-patient and emergency clinics. They also provide medicines, HIV/AIDS programs, safe water, sanitation and self-sustainment programs. Their clinics in Ngodzi and Kasese serve a large population of rural Malawians who have no other access to medical or spiritual care. Our mission is to assist Lifeline Malawi in bringing "Hope, Healing & Dignity" to the people. We are also challenging village leaders to improve the health of their people, and we're providing spiritual encouragement to Lifeline Malawi staff and local church leaders.

September 2010

The second EMAS Team to the Lifeline Malawi (LLM) Ngodzi Clinic consisted of one family doctor, three nurses, and four others who were designated as a 'construction team.' Dr. H. Visser had a lot of contact with Pastor Yunusu Banda who helped with translation. He teaches his congregation preventative health and was eager to learn more. We also visited two primary schools and gave a health promotion talk to the students. These were well received.

The physician and nurses worked at the main LLM clinic, in Ngodzi. We saw about 250 patients, many children with malaria or pneumonia, and many adults with HIV/AIDS. Some of the outreach clinics were cancelled due to lack of funds and drugs, with the exception of one clinic in Matowe. That clinic was combined with a school visit where we gave a health talk and screened children for anemia and scalp ringworm. Our pre-med student, had opportunity to learn how to prepare malaria and TB smears in the lab.

Our medical team assisted with the distribution of wheelchairs donated by Rotary International. These are specially designed for the disabled in developing countries. We had the opportunity to minister to the recipients in prayer and in sharing the love of Jesus.

The 'construction' portion of our team had a very productive time renovating the Matowe Outreach Clinic and rebuilding a pit latrine. The village chief and others worked side by side on the project. Although it wasn't completely finished the funds we raised, for this project, will be used to bring it to completion.

Some of the team members preached two Sundays in local churches, prayed with patients, encouraged local pastors, and showed Christian films. Three of us shared in LLM's morning staff devotions, encouraging them in their faith and challenging them to integrate their faith into their medical practice.

Our two weeks in Malawi were rich and rewarding for
us personally. We were stretched with the cross-
cultural experience and we will never be the same.
Africa and Malawi have left their imprint on our hearts.

Clinic upgrade

We have been challenged to help upgrade a clinic to deliver healthcare services to the villagers. We have plans to improve a structure, providing a more adequate solution for this community which is very much in need of healthcare services.

We appreciate your support of our fundraising
activities, as well as your thoughts and prayers.

EMAS sends missions teams
to assist Lifeline Malawi.

November 2009

In collaboration with Lifeline Malawi, the EMAS team provides hands-on medical care in village clinics, assists with training of local medical personnel, and provides spiritual support. Malaria is rampant in this region and the team has also distributed insecticide-treated mosquito nets to protect people from infected mosquitoes. Malaria often causes severe anemia and death in children.

Planning your Lifeline Malawi Short-term Mission (STM)

Lifeline Malawi is excited to join together in partnership with short-term mission teams that are aligned with their core values and are willing to come with a servant's heart and help Lifeline Malawi advance its vision for the people of Malawi.

Medical Focus

  • Assist team general tropical health curative services:
    • ◦Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM);
      ◦Malaria;
      ◦Tuberculosis;
      ◦Tropical Skin Disease;
      ◦Cholera & G.I. Disease;
      ◦Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI);
  • Specialty diagnosis and treatment clinics—AIDS/HIV,
    pediatrics, antenatal, immunization, dental, vision,
    hearing, psychiatric, etc.;
  • Training of medical staff in medical advances, practices and insights;
  • Community training in hygiene and sanitation, birth control, STD, HIV/AIDS;
  • Pharmaceutical management and patient records management.

There are many reasons why people want to come to Africa, and in particular Malawi as part of a short-term team. Each year, the specific priorities and projects will vary. It is always best to check with Lifeline Malawi first to see which STMs are still available. In many cases, there is some flexibility in order to accommodate team leaders and their team's availability, flights, and other logistics.
