30,000 Trapped Due to Flooding Waters
in Northeastern China.

Heavy rains in northeastern China have caused the worse flooding in more than ten years. Tens of thousands have been stranded without electricity. In the province of Jilin, about 30,000 residents in the town of Kouqian have been trapped in their homes, following torrential rains which caused the Xingshan Reservoir, the Wende and the Songhua rivers to overflow. Flooding is widespread throughout China. Riverbanks have been sandbagged as the Yangtze and the Han rivers are expected to overflow.

Typhoon Hits Southern China.
Thousands Evacuated.

The destructive typhoon that hit the Philippines has now hit the city of Sanya on Hainan island in southern China, with 78 miles per hour winds (126 km). Tens of thousands of people have been evacuated, but only one death has been reported so far. Flights and ferries have been cancelled. Almost 40,000 people in Hainan, and more than 20,000 people in Guangdong have been evacuated as they are in the immediate path of the typhoon.

Help Desperately Needed in Haiti
Aid Slow to Reach the “Bon Repos” Community.
EMAS CANADA stepping in to fill the gap.

Many of the communities, surrounding Port-au-Prince, have been left in shambles. It is estimated that 200,000 have lost their lives, 300,000 have been injured, 4,000 have had amputations, and 1.5 million people are homeless. The needs are enormous.

International aid doesn't appear to be reaching the outlying communities of Port-au-Prince, including Bon Repos where EMAS CANADA has been sending missions teams for over 10 years. 50% of the buildings and houses in this area have been destroyed by the earthquake. Our Haitian partners have set up a makeshift emergency operations centre and EMAS CANADA is sending them funds to enable them to distribute food and water to many people in this area. Supplies are being purchased locally—no bottlenecks. These relief efforts will gradually evolve into a food-for-work program. A medical/humanitarian EMAS Team will travel to Haiti in May to bring assistance. There are an estimated 50,000 people in this region of Port-au-Prince and many without food or water, trying to survive. Your contribution is greatly needed.

Tragic Loss in Haiti

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of the Haitian medical student, Vicky, whose studies EMAS had been supporting. She had survived the earthquake but recently died during childbirth, in the Dominican Republic. Her death is a tragic loss on many levels. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and the community that supported her during her studies over the past nine years. See Haiti project.

Narrow Escapes in Haiti
Thanking God for Miracles

Some of our Haitian counterparts have had close calls in escaping death as a result of the earthquake.

Denis, although injured, is alive and well and so is his family. Dr. Jude and Dr. Robert and their families are fine, although Jude narrowly escaped, being crushed in a collapsing building, by mere seconds.

The local church building collapsed killing 2 or 3 people who were inside. Had the earthquake hit only 30 minutes later, the church would have been packed with people for evening service.

We thank God that His hand can be seen,
even in circumstances like these.

Tax-Smart Giving Opportunities

We now have an EMAS Development Trust Fund. (See Planned Giving.) This trust fund incorporates the benefits concerning capital gains tax on charitable gifts of publicly listed securities, that was contained in the 2006 federal budget. Namely, non-cash assets donated to charitable organizations will not result in any capital gains tax being attributed to the donor. Because Ottawa has given charitable organizations this added benefit, it is more profitable to you to support EMAS CANADA initiatives.

In addition to gifts of publicly listed securities and stocks, you may also make gifts of life insurance, annuities, revocable and irrevocable trusts, or leave a bequest in your will through the Planned Giving Program. Brochures regarding these different types of gifts can be accessed on the Planned Giving page of this website or can be requested through the EMAS CANADA National Office ~
