Gifts of Hope

Planned Giving is a way for the donor to make a contribution to EMAS in the future, that could possibly benefit him/her today, while providing for heirs and reducing taxes. “Where there's a will, there's a way.”

Your gift to the EMAS Development Trust supports the ministry of EMAS by providing resources for one or more of the programmes and activities initiated by EMAS CANADA.

EMAS is a registered charity, BN/Registration Number 84158 1861 RR0001.

Charitable Donations Benefit You.

Giving to a registered charity is a wonderful generous gesture. In Canada, you also become eligible for charitable tax credits. There are two charitable tax credits that you can claim-one federal and one provincial. The federal tax credit is the same for all Canadians and is broken down as follows:

  • The first $200 of donations are eligible for a 15% tax credit.
  • Donations above $200 are eligible for a 29% tax credit.

You are allowed to combine your receipts with your spouse's and claim them on one return. This can be beneficial when your individual donations are under $200. You also have the option to carry your donations forward to another year (maximum 5 years).

The more you give, the more you save on your taxes (claim donation amounts up to 75% of your net income in the current year). You can also claim provincial tax credits, over and above the federal tax credits. It works pretty much the same way. For details pertaining to your province, see the Tax Credit Table on the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website.

A Smart Way To Give

Donating appreciated publicly listed securities (stocks or mutual funds) is the most tax-effective way to give. You pay no capital gains tax and you get the charitable tax credit. The EMAS Development Trust Fund incorporates these benefits, that have been in effect since May 2, 2006.

In addition to gifts of publicly listed securities and stocks, you may also make gifts of life insurance, annuities, revocable and irrevocable trusts, or leave a bequest in your will through the Planned Giving Program. Brochures regarding these different types of gifts can be accessed above or can be requested through the EMAS CANADA National Office ~
