Rwenzori Mountains Baghuma Integrated Association (RAMBIA) is an indigenous non–governmental, developmental organization, formed in 1993. They are located in the Katebwa sub-county, near Fort Portal, in the far west of Uganda. They are a level II facility, aiming to be upgraded to a level III facility.

The leaders of the RAMBIA Health Centre have built a small dispensary using money from bee-keeping, brick-making and rearing goats. They pay a pittance to a nurse and a clinical officer to run the dispensary. They manage periodically to buy some medications and treat patients. They are building a very basic maternity ward but have no funds left for its completion. They have a part-time, volunteer midwife but no equipment. They have no way of dealing with difficult births. There is no electricity and no running water. The nearest hospital is over an hour away and the cost of getting there is prohibitive.

OBJECTIVES

RAMBIA's aim is to develop strategies for improving the standard of living of their surrounding community, while advocating for human rights and non-violence. Some of RAMBIA's health-related goals include:

  • improvement of health facilities;
  • primary health care;
  • sexual and reproductive health;
  • anti-natal care services;
  • sensitizing the community on HIV/AIDS,
    providing counselling and treatment;
  • providing preventative and curative services
    for malaria and other life-threatening diseases;
  • water, hygiene and environmental sanitation.
