The country is very poor especially in the countryside and villages. Many towns have unemployment rates in excess of 50%. This has consequences on healthcare. Some mothers cannot cope and either abandon their children or place them in orphanages. More than 100,000 children currently live in orphanages.

Drs. Art and Marlyce Friesen first went to the Ukraine as tourists in 1998. They met Doctors and Pharmacists from the Ukraine Christian Medical Association and formed friendships. They were invited back and have gone back every year under the auspices of EMAS CANADA, which has sent other healthcare workers as well, to bring assistance to nursing homes, hospitals and orphanages in the area. The situation has improved somewhat over the years.

December 2008

There are still many hardships in this region. The elderly and the disabled are especially at risk. We've been providing funds, equipment, supplies and medications to clinics and hospitals, nursing homes and an orphanage. We’ve been helping to improve the local medical clinics and train local medical personnel.
