There are many poor rural communities in Vietnam. Many people cannot afford medical care and many children are at risk. The existing healthcare services are in much need of improvement.

Our annual medical mission to Vietnam began in 1995. Every year, a group of doctors, dentists, nurses, and volunteers goes on a two-week trip to Vietnam, treating poor patients in remote areas, working with local doctors, training at major medical centres, and helping hospitals with equipment.

November 2009

The Vietnam team serves in several provinces, treating thousands of patients, setting up medical clinics, performing eye surgeries, dental care, dispensing medications, eye glasses, food and clothes.

The team has sponsored more than 500 heart surgeries for children, and there is still a long waiting list. They support a doctor at a charity clinic. They also gave grants to four people to undergo chiropractic training and funded their chiropractic clinic in Battambang, Cambodia.

Thanks to all team members and benefactors
who make these trips successful.

July 2008

Medical Aid for Vietnam has completed another successful medical mission, with a team of 76 professionals and volunteers, working in several provinces. The mission was divided into three smaller teams which served more than 8,000 patients, with medical treatment, eye surgeries, dental check-ups and extractions, giving out free medications (donated by CMMB Catholic Medical Mission Board), eye glasses, food and clothes.

At the convent of the Sisters of the Visitation in Bai Dau, Hue, we met about 30 children whose heart surgeries we sponsored. What a blessing to see these children now happy and living normal lives. Over the past five years, we have sponsored more than 500 children for heart surgeries, and yet the waiting list still keeps getting longer.

The Delta Team visited an orphanage where we spent time with 130 children. At every site we visited, we encountered people who needed further medical attention. At times, we were able to arrange for them to go to the hospital for treatment. But in many cases, we couldn’t help because our funds were running out.

In addition to the medical outreach mission, Medical Aid for Vietnam also brought assistance to others less fortunate:

  • performed cataract surgeries; provided all implants and funded all medical and post-care expenses;
  • established free medical clinics in remote areas; provided medications and supplies;
  • provided a salary to hire a doctor to work on an on-going basis at a charitable clinic in Pleiku;
  • paid to send children for congenital open-heart surgery;
  • gave grants to four people to undergo four weeks of chiropractic training; funded their chiropractic clinic in Battambang, Cambodia.

Thanks to all team members who have volunteered their time and talents, and have worked so hard to make this trip successful. We would also like to thank all the benefactors, whose generous contributions have made our medical missions possible.

Spring 2007

"Outreach and Training"
The team sets up outreach camps, at medical clinics or at local churches. They examine the patients, give out medications, extract teeth, hand out eyeglasses, perform cataract surgeries, and also give out gifts of food and basic necessities. The team also provides care for orphanages, and does advanced training of Vietnamese healthcare professionals at the major medical centres.

The team is usually 15-20 people. If we have more than 30 people, we divide into two teams and head out to different locations. Each team normally treats around 4,000 patients during the two-week mission trip.

"Heart to Live and to Love"
A Project Assisting Children with Heart Surgery

As we travelled around the country we came across many children with congenital heart problems who needed surgery. As the team could not perform the surgeries, we decided to do some fund-raising to cover the cost of these operations. The religious sisters of the Visitation are kind enough to help the children and their families coming from different locations, waiting to be admitted to the hospital. We have sponsored more than 80 children undergoing heart surgery at Hue Central Hospital! Each surgery would have cost approximately $2,000-$2,500 US; so all in all, we have funded close to $200,000 US, thanks to all the generous benefactors, donors, and friends of Medical Aid for Vietnam!

During a previous mission, we brought a portable phaco machine for cataract surgery and donated it to the Nha Trang hospital. We also donated implants and other supplies to enable the local doctors to do free cataract surgeries for the poor.

We ask for your prayers, your support and ask that you to let others know about the Vietnam medical mission.

Thank you and God bless,
Fr. Tien Tran
